Introducing Loco.Engineering DCC/WCC Train Sound Decoders – Wireless, Packed with Features, and Fully Programmable.
The day has finally come, and we are excited to announce that our train DCC/WCC decoder is available for orders! The processing time remains 5-8 business days for all decoder orders for one simple reason: we don't mass-produce. This allows us to continuously improve the hardware without being stuck with large quantities of unsold inventory. Unlike other model train brands that produce electronics in bulk, we craft every decoder in our workshop and only begin production once an order is placed.
Why Our Decoder is One of the Most Advanced on the Market
Our new train decoder is among the most sophisticated available today. Wondering why? Just take a look at the features and specifications packed into its tiny size.
Modern ComponentsOur 6-layer PCB train decoder features some of the most advanced components available, including a dual-core XTensa LX7 MCU capable of running at 240 MHz. This allows the decoder to not only process DCC signals, play sounds, and control the motor through a BDC motor driver, but also to send and receive messages over WiFi/BLE. (It appears we’ve developed the first wireless train decoder that seamlessly switches between DCC and WiFi/BLE without requiring a restart, handling both simultaneously.)
Additionally, the decoder can read data from external sensors, NFC readers, and control servo motors—allowing you to control doors, pantographs, or even windshield wipers. It can even record video from the cab!
An essential component of any DCC train decoder is the motor driver, which determines how smoothly a train moves. We use Texas Instruments drivers that not only provide smooth operation but also report motor current. Of course, we’ve included components for Back Electromotive Force (BEMF) with advanced settings for those who seek realistic train physics in their models.
The decoder also includes a powerful audio amplifier capable of playing 16-bit audio up to 2W at 8Ω.
Simple and Flexible ControlLoco.Engineering decoders support DCC (Digital Command Control), WCC (Wireless Command Control), and DC (Direct Current/Analog Control). Mfx support is coming soon. You can even implement your own communication protocols over WiFi, Bluetooth, RF, or even via the tracks—since our hardware and firmware are fully open-source.
For DCC users, forget about cumbersome CV programming—everything can be configured via a web browser! No need for wires or connecting your decoder to a computer. Simply open a browser on your mobile phone, tablet, or computer and configure the decoder’s behavior in response to various DCC packets.
If you prefer modern WCC, our decoders can be controlled directly from a web browser without the need for a command station. The only requirement is that your controlling device must have WiFi and a modern web browser (from 2022 or later).
Open-Source and Open ProtocolOne of Loco.Engineering’s core principles is zero vendor lock-in. What does this mean for you? Anyone can access our firmware, build hardware based on the documentation and schematics we provide, and create their own decoders. We provide the source code, examples, and an open protocol (WCC), ensuring complete flexibility.
Requiring specialized tools to update firmware, as most decoder brands still do in 2024, is outdated. We’re proud to say that Loco.Engineering is the first commercial train decoder on the market with open-source firmware and schematics.
